Valencia, land of gunpowder and light, is known for its gastronomy, its historical heritage, its culture, its sea, its mountains and, of course, its traditions. The most important of these are the Fallas, the most representative festival of the city and the surrounding areas.
Declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2016, the Fallas of Valencia are celebrated every year from 15 to 19 of March in honour of Saint Joseph and attract thousands of visitors from all over the world. Of all the events that make up the days of this celebration, the offering of flowers to the Virgen de los Desamparados, patron saint of the city, is undoubtedly one of the most emotional and anticipated moments for both the Falleros and Falleras, as well as the rest of visitors.
Would you like to know all the details about this festival and why it is so important to Valencians? If there is one thing that defines Valencians, it is their deep sense of togetherness, their devotion to traditions and the joy with which they share their customs with everyone. Fallas is not just a ceremony, but a collective expression of identity, emotion and pride that transforms the city into a stage of vibrant colours, where Falleros and Falleras (Fallas participant), neighbours, friends and visitors share and celebrate together.
The floral offering is one of the most emblematic and emotional acts of the Fallas of Valencia, in which Falleros and Falleras parade in their traditional costumes to bring bouquets of flowers to the Virgen de los Desamparados, also affectionately known by Valencians as “La Geperudeta”. This event is celebrated every year on the 17th and 18th of March, the days before the cremà, the last day of the Fallas, when the Fallas monuments are burned.
During the floral offering, the Fallas Commissions of the city and of many towns in the province that celebrate this festivity, make a pilgrimage through the main streets of the city to the Plaza de la Virgen, where there is a very large wooden structure that represents the Virgen de los Desamparados. The image of the Virgin, 14 metres high, is covered with the flowers left by the falleros, creating a colourful mantle whose design changes every year.
This devotional act is one of the favourite activities of the Fallas for the Falleros and Falleras. It stands out not only for its religious component, but also for its cultural and social relevance, being a moment of unity between all the Fallas commissions, an act of devotion for Valencians and an attraction for visitors who come to witness the beauty and solemnity of the ceremony.
Every year the Flower Offering of the Fallas takes place on the days before Saint Joseph's Day, the closing day of the Fallas. For the year 2025, the 17th and 18th of March fall on Monday and Tuesday.. The parade starts at 15:30 p.m. and lasts until midnight on both days. The Fallas commissions make their way through the centre of Valencia, ending up in Plaza de la Virgen to leave their floral offerings.
The tradition of the floral offering began in 1941, when some clavariesas, accompanied by women dressed as peasants and wearing mantillas, placed bouquets of flowers in the Basilica of the Virgin. In 1943, the Falla San Vicente-Periodista Azzati, with its Fallera Mayor Paquita Pérez, made a similar offering, consolidating the practice. In 1946, the call was extended to all the Fallas commissions and became an integral part of the Fallas festivities.
In addition to the numerous floral tributes to the Virgin of los Desamparados during the Fallas, Valencia offers other floral tributes at different times of the year. The most important of these are:
