A tour through the history of the Valencia Water Court
The Water Tribunal of the Vega de Valencia, more popularly known as the Water Tribunal, is considered the oldest judicial institution in Europe. Its origins are largely unknown to Valencians. Although no document exists that mentions the Tribunal until the 18th century, it is believed that its beginnings date back to the period of Al-Andalus.
Since then, this tribunal has been responsible for resolving, in person, orally, and in Valencian, the native language of the Valencian Community, disputes related to the use and exploitation of irrigation water among farmers in the Irrigation Communities of the irrigation ditches that are part of this Tribunal. These include Quart, Benàger i Faitanar, Tormos, Mislata, Mestalla, Favara, Rascanya, Rovella, and Chirivella.
Every Thursday at noon, eight black-clad trustees, representing the ancient irrigation ditches of the Vega de Valencia, meet to resolve conflicts related to water use. Without the need for lawyers, documents, or bureaucracy, the Water Tribunal issues its rulings orally, quickly, and effectively, in a process that has maintained a millennia-old tradition unchanged for centuries.
What are the hours and where can I attend the Water Tribunal?
Every Thursday at 12:00 noon, if you visit the Puerta de los Apóstoles (Gate of the Apostles) of Valencia Cathedral, located in the iconic Plaza de la Virgen, you can witness this Valencian tradition. If a holiday falls on a Thursday, the Tribunal is held earlier than Wednesday.
We recommend arriving early to ensure a good spot from which to observe the proceedings and remain silent. Remember that this is not a theatrical performance, but a real court session in full swing.
How to get to the water court?
Getting to the Water Tribunal is easy, as it’s located in the heart of Valencia. It’s right in the heart of the Barrio del Carmen neighborhood, and very close to the Church of San Nicolás, popularly known as the Valencian Sistine Chapel for its architectural style and spectacular vault. The easiest way to get there is on foot, as it’s located in a pedestrian zone. However, public transportation options such as the metro, bus, or taxi are available to get to the site.
Can I park near the Water Court?
If you prefer to travel by car, keep in mind that parking in Valencia’s historic center can be difficult due to its narrow streets and pedestrian zones. However, there are several public parking lots nearby where you can park your vehicle.
